Spider-Man Homecoming | Box Office Success
Spider-Man: Homecoming has swung to a $117 million domestic opening weekend, outpacing most early predictions and landing the third highest opening of 2017!
Spider-Man: Homecoming has swung to a $117 million domestic opening weekend, outpacing most early predictions and landing the third highest opening of 2017!
Homecoming’s huge weekend haul makes it the second highest opening for a Spider-Man film, second only to Spider-Man 3’s $151 million opening in 2007. It is also the best opening film in a Spider-Man series outgrossing Spider-Man ($114 million), and The Amazing Spider-Man ($62 million).
Possibly the most impressive box office feat is that Spider-Man: Homecoming now holds the largest opening weekend for a new solo franchise film in the MCU, topping Iron Man ($98 million), GotG ($94 Million), and Marvel’s last solo entry Dr. Strange ($85 million). This is great news for one of the leading franchise going into Phase 4, especially considering this is the third attempt at Spider-Man in the last 15 years.
Homecoming will run into heavy competition over the next few weeks, including War for the Planet of the Apes and Dunkirk, but being a highly praised, all ages summer option, it should have no issue topping $300 million during its domestic run.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Spoiler Free Review
Spider-Man’s entrance into the MCU has never meant as much as it probably should have to me. I really enjoyed his appearance in Civil War but I had yet to fully appreciate the importance of his inclusion in the MCU, that is until I saw Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Spider-Man’s entrance into the MCU has never meant as much as it probably should have to me. I really enjoyed his appearance in Civil War but I had yet to fully appreciate the importance of his inclusion in the MCU, that is until I saw Spider-Man: Homecoming.
I haven't had this much genuine fun in a movie since Guardians of the Galaxy was released in 2014. Homecoming is full of heart, action, and excellent story telling with characters you immediately want to see more of. This is a shining example of how to tell a personalized story in a massively expansive Cinematic Universe. Each cameo and Universe reference served a purpose to the Spider-Man narrative and provided a solid foundation for the film to launch off of into its own story.
Taking Peter Parker back to his high school (teenage) roots gives us a fresh take on the hero’s struggle in the MCU. Tom Holland's performance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man is profoundly engaging and he is surround by a diverse cast of extremely likeable characters. Even with MCU heavy weights like RDJ/Iron Man, it is still very much a Peter Parker/Spider-Man film. The suit, web-slinging, and CG is flawless, I couldn't tell where the practical ends and the CG begins.
Homecoming’s main villain doesn't live up to ‘Loki’ status but Adrian Toomes/Vulture strays away from Marvel’s one-dimensional villain problem and is an excellent adversary for a young hero in a world full of superheroes.
As a fandom, we have to accept each film in the MCU as a sequel to the one before and we can no longer expect to have a completely isolated film that doesn’t acknowledge and integrate what came before. That being said, to have a full appreciation for the references and building blocks in the film, make sure to refresh yourself with The Avengers, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: AoU before heading into Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Spider-Man is going to be one of the pillars of the MCU going forward and Homecoming is an excellent solo and franchise entry into the ever expanding MCU, see it NOW!

Inhumans Teaser Trailer Released
Marvel released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Inhumans TV event set to debut on IMAX screens on September 1st, 2017 with the full series on ABC on September 22, 2017.
Marvel released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Inhumans TV event set to debut on IMAX screens on September 1st, 2017 with the full 10 episode series hitting ABC on September 22, 2017.
The history of the Inhumans in the MCU is much more turbulent than any other property to date. Once slated to have a theatrical release of November 2, 2018 it was quickly shifted to July 12, 2019 in the wake of Spider-Man joining the MCU. Its original release slot it would fallen in between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 and would have had to tie intimately the storyline developed between those event films.
At the time of the original announcement in 2014 I speculated that the terrigen bomb would have been set off towards the end of Avengers: Infinity War which would lead directly into an Inhumans film. This would have somewhat paralleled the 2013 Infinity comicbook event that launched the wave of Inhumans titles we have today.
As the Inhumans were set to make their original theatrical debut in 2018 they made their first MCU canonic appearance on TV towards the end of the second season of AOS in 2014. The storyline in AOS is a bit of a hit and miss but they did have some freedom to set up the origins of the Inhumans while noticeably staying away from any mention of the Royal Family or Attilan.
As the Inhuman story continued to develop in AOS through its 4th season the Inhumans film was quietly removed from the cinematic slate in early 2016 and placed into development purgatory until the announcement of the Inhuman IMAX/ABC event in late 2016.
The Inhmans is going to be a real test for the continuity of the MCU. If AOS, Inhumans, and the MCU are in fact contained within one single universe there needs to be references and subtle ties to the wider MCU continuity in the Inhumans. With a unprecedented Cinematic-TV style of release, this could be the perfect continuity bridge for the entire MCU.
Check out the trailer below and listen to Episode #79 of The Nerd Room for our detailed breakdown of the Inhumans teaser trailer.

The Defenders are set to hit Netflix on August 18th, 2017 and arriving alongside will be Hasbro’s recently revealed Netflix Marvel Legends Wave!
The wave consists of four MCU Netflix characters (Daredevil, Elektra, Punisher, and Jessica Jones) and two comic based characters (Bullseye and Blade) with a BAF Man Thing.
The Netflix based Legends are a must have, the sculpts and character selections for this first wave are excellent. In the past the Legends comic figures have paralleled on screen appearances of characters, could the inclusion of Bullseye and Blade in this wave a way hint at what is to come in the Netflix series in the future? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
The Defenders will hit Netflix on August 18th, 2017.
