The release date for Netflix & Marvel's The Punisher has finally been declassified and announced as November 17th, 2017.

That date may sound familiar as it will pit The Punisher against DC's team up film Justice League. Don't expect the head-to-head battle to put any kind of dent in the Justice League's weekend box office but it will gives us a full weekend of epic comicbook content to consume!

Check out the latest intense Punisher Trailer below!

AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER!

A 16 week Avengers cross-over event will be dropping this January that sees The AVENGERS, UNCANNY AVENGERS and U.S. AVENGERS team up to take on one of the biggest threats to the Marvel Universe ever!

No Surrender1.jpg

A 16 week Avengers cross-over event will be dropping this January that sees The AVENGERS, UNCANNY AVENGERS and U.S. AVENGERS team up to take on one of the biggest threats to the Marvel Universe ever!

Check out the press release from Marvel and let us know what you think in the comments below!

New York, NY—September 28, 2017—It’s the end of an Avengers Era as we know it! And in the team’s final days, a change has come to the Marvel Universe in the form of a story that’s filled with so much action and so much drama, Marvel had no choice but to make it a weekly epic!

Beginning this January, Marvel will unleash the epic AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER with AVENGERS #675, a weekly saga that unites the casts and creative teams of three titles into an epic tale of heroic action, jaw-dropping cliffhangers, and drastic adventures! The AVENGERS, UNCANNY AVENGERS and U.S. AVENGERS come together in a powerhouse of an event that will be unleashed in a story as spectacular and epic as the Marvel Universe itself.

Featuring one of Marvel’s biggest collaborations to date, each issue will be co-written by superstar writers Mark Waid, Al Ewing and Jim Zub with art by Pepe Larraz for the first month, Kim Jacinto for the second month, and Paco Medina for the third month. With shocking returns and brand new characters, NO SURRENDER is a book where every character will get their moment…where alliances will be forged…and where the earth will be forever changed!

“The Earth has been stolen! That’s the kickoff to the wildest AVENGERS epic ever put to paper, a widescreen adventure with a massive cast and an unlimited budget,” teased SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Avengers past and present will be called upon to cope with a threat spanning out of the pages of MARVEL LEGACY #1. And like that oversized special, there’s a huge character return or two along the way that fans have been asking for—and one that they didn’t even know they wanted!”

From Falcon to Black Panther to the mysterious Voyager, NO SURRENDER will see an appearance from every current Avenger – those we know and love and those we’ve never heard of. But what happens when Lethal Legion and the Black Order battle their way across the Earth? Most importantly, how will this new incarnation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes come together to fight one of the biggest threats the world has ever seen? This is just the beginning, but there’s so much more to come.

Don’t miss a truly inclusive celebration of the legacy that is Marvel’s Avengers, when NO SURRENDER hits comic shops this January!

Could the Fantastic Four Join the MCU?

When it was announced the Spider-Man would be joining the MCU and appearing in some of the existing Marvel Cinematic movies, and that some of the MCU heavy weights would appear in Spidey’s movies, I started to think that perhaps we might see some of the other Marvel characters returning to the MCU also. Then when I saw Spider-Man: Homecoming and it was revealed that Tony was moving out of Stark Tower, my previous theory seemed a little more likely…

Lets start by acknowledging that one group of characters from Marvel’s stable of heroes have had a troubled cinematic past. The Fantastic Four struggled under Tim Story and positively failed under Josh Trank, so bringing them into the MCU might be A. Possible, and B. Advantageous to all involved, including 20th Century Fox.

Lets speculate.

In Spider-Man:Homecoming we learn that Tony Stark has sold Stark Tower, former head quarters of The Avengers and is moving all his stuff up state to the newly remodelled Avengers Mansion. So who bought the Tower? I have a theory.

What If Reed Richards purchased the Tower from Stark as in about the enter the MCU with his family and friends? Could Stark Tower about to be renamed The Baxter Building? I had this idea. While ago and came up with a potential story outline for what could be an interesting Iron Man 4 movie that would introduce the Fantastic Four.

Here goes…

Reed Richards is a long time friend/rival and contemporary of Tony Stark and together with his wife Sue and fiends Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, Reed decides to kick his research into high gear. Reed’s research is centred on the portal that opened above New York during the events of the first Avengers movie. For years Reed has been studying the phenomenon from afar, all the while asking Tony for access to the site in order to get a better vantage point, AKA directly beneath the location of the portal. Tony would never allow Reed to get close (you know how he can be with rivals right? Hammer!) and instead feeds Reed just enough data to keep him quiet.

Enter Victor Von Doom

That’s when Reed gets an investor on board, in the form of Victor Von Doom. Doom could be a contemporary of both Tony and Reed. A scientist looking for answers, and possibly looking for power. With Doom’s huge wealth in his corner, Reed manages to buy Stark Tower from Tony, who has since lost interest in the portal over NYC.

Now, in order to get a closer look at the portal, Reed and Doom, with the help of Sue and test pilots Johnny and Ben, build a space lab, a platform that will launch into space and sit between The Baxter Building/NYC and the portal. Here they can carry put a full range of tests on the location of the now closed portal.

This is where Tony reenters the picture. I imagine Tony pulling strings at the government to gain access to the project so he can keep a close eye on things and make sure no further mistakes are made.

I like the idea of Tony using the white Mark XXXIX Starboost armour during the mission, armour that will give him much greater levels of protection. In this armour Tony will join Johnny and Ben who are conducting a space walk to calibrate sensors whilst Reed and Sue are trying to slow down Doom, who is pushing a little too hard to get results. This is where things go south.

During the test Tony becomes aware of some unusual activity around the location of the portal. Doom notices too and uses his sensors to stimulate the portal which pulses and blasts he platform and everyone on it with a belt of energy. This way we can preserve the traditions FF origin story by having the team exposed to huge amounts of radiation, gamma, vita and whatever else has been in the MCU up until this point.

Tony, protected in his Starboost armour quickly reacts to the accident and rescues the team members out in space, Johnny and Ben, both of whom are rendered unconscious by the blast. Then he returns to the platform and saves Reed and Sue, his frustration at Doom means he saves him last, exposing Doom to near fatal levels of radiation (this way we preserve Tony’s penchant for creating his own worst enemies!).

Back on Earth, at the Baxter Building, Tony places Doom inside one of his suits in order to save his life. The suit is a dark coloured Iron man suit made from Vibranium. It has a greenish tint to it. See where I'm going here?

Meanwhile, Reed and Sue work to stabilise Johnny and Ben who have both been profoundly effected by the blast of radiation.

Ben Grimm

Ben, who was closet to the event horizon was hit with huge amounts of vita radiation and as a result has increased strength like Cap, but his genes have been altered and coral like growths of hardened skin form rock like plates all over his body. Gross.

Johnny Storm

Johnny, much like Reed and Sue, has been altered in such a way that he can create spacial anomalies around himself. Johnny can create a force field around himself which can be ignited with him safely inside. Flame on!

Sue Storm

Sue can also create spacial anomalies, which she uses to bend light around her rendering her invisible.

Reed Richards

Reed discovers that he can create wormholes through which he can reach, effectively collapsing space. From the vantage point of those watching Reed appears to stretch but in reality he is manipulating space to bring objects closer to him. Neat trick!

Whilst the team are getting used to their new abilities with Tony advising from the sidelines, Doom wakes up. Effectively trapped inside the Vibranium armour, Doom begins to panic. The suit AI tries to calm Doom, but panic sets in and Doom forces the faceplate open. When Doom comes into contact with the atmosphere inside the Baxter Building there is a reaction that causes an explosion, fusing Doom and the Vibranium suit!

The team’s first confrontation is with Doom as he panics and tries to escape he building.

Now,  I haven't really gotten a lot further than that with this idea. I think having Tony be the cause of yet another bad guy in the MCU is nice and neat and plays into that character. Doom could become obsessed with getting back to the portal and perhaps opening it again, perhaps out of spite, perhaps in search of answers, but whatever they do would make for an interesting entry into both the Iron Man series and the larger MCU.

I think it would be an important step for the MCU to bring in characters like the Fantastic Four for the next phase at Marvel. Maybe we could even get the Secret Wars story at some point in the future. I love the idea of the Fantastic Four and Doom opening that portal over NYC might expose us to a new threat. A threat from Beyond…

Thank you for reading

Marvel Studios | SDCC 2017

Hot off the heals of their appearance at D23 and the unveiling of the first official teaser trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios stormed Hall H on Saturday to highlight their next two films; Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, while also dropping teases for Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel and Avengers: Infinity War!

We will be discussing all the details of Marvel Studios SDCC 2017 reveals on episode #81 of The Nerd Room, airing as part of our 2 episode coverage of D23 and SDCC 2017 on Wednesday July 26th.

Marvel kicked off the SDCC weekend by releasing new posters for Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther. The Thor: Ragnarok poster perfectly depicts the colour palette and the tone of the film while continuing to amp up the anticipation level for what promises to be a very different Thor film. The Black Panther poster is a huge step up from the first poster which looked painfully photoshopped, The King has certainly arrived!

Marvel Studios Hall H Panel

Posted by We Live Entertainment

The panel kicks off with Kevin Feige revealing details about Ant-Man & The Wasp, and Captain Marvel. As predicted by TNR's own Troy, concept art for Captain Marvel was shown as well as the reveal of some huge plot details. Captain Marvel will be set in the 90's before the events of Iron Man and will feature a 2-eyed Nick Fury (with some de-aging tech applied). This is a unique setting for a MCU film as traditionally each film serves as a sequel to the one previous. The 90's setting will allow for a full origin story for Captain Marvel outside of the events of Infinity War and may also gives us that Nick Fury origin story.

Probably the biggest reveal of the panel was that Captain Marvel will be battling the shape-shifting Skrulls. The film rights for the Skrulls were previously thought to have been owned by Fox under the Fantastic Four banner, but with this reveal we now know that they are either shared or Marvel has been working with Fox to acquired back characters. I'm immesnsly excited for the Skrulls to appear in this film and I can only image what this means for future films! Will we get a secret invasion storyline in Phase 4? Is their a Skrull already amongst the ranks of the MCU heroes?

Captain Marvel lands in theatres on March 8th, 2019.

Kevin Feige revealed casting news from Ant-Man and the Wasp and although plot details are being kept tight we now know additions to the cast include of Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch, Randall Park as SHIELD agent Jimmy Woo, Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, and Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster. The inclusion of Janet Van Dyne and Bill Foster, two important legacy characters from the comics, only gets me that much more excited for this film!

On the final day of SDCC 2017 Marvel released a concept art poster for Ant-Man and the Wasp. The poster sees Giant-Man fighting along side of Wasp and confirms the return of Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and Michael Pena.

Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theatres on July 6th, 2018.

The first part of the Marvel Studios panel ended with the cast of Thor: Ragnarok discussing their characters in a bit of detail and the release of a brand new trailer! Highlight from the trailer include an incredible colour palette, witty dialog, Loki's role, and an evolved Hulk!

Thor: Ragnarok smashes into theatres on November 3rd, 2017.

The Thor: Ragnarok panel was followed by the Black Panther panel. The cast for this film is absolutely incredible and it continues to rank amongst the most anticipated films for 2018. Footage was shown but not released outside of Hall H, watch for a second trailer dropping in the coming months!

Black Panther drops on February 16th, 2018

Marvel did show the packed house in Hall H the Avengers: Infinity War teaser trailer and although they have yet to release it publicly (much to the dismay of the entire internet), Marvel did release a 3-part poster over the weekend depicting the scenes shown in the trailer and when merged together we get an epic banner poster!

Infinity war Banner1.jpg

Painted by Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding, the poster gives us our best look at what appears to be the hero groupings we are going to see in the first part of the film and we also get a good look at Nomad Cap, and Teen Groot!

Thanks you for reading and make sure to check out Episode #81 of The Nerd Room for our breakdown of the weekend reveals (drops July 26th).

Avengers: Infinity War | Thanos Rising

Away from any competing comicbook films and Studios (a la SDCC 2017), Marvel Studios thrust themselves to centre stage at D23 to start to build momentum for Avenger: Infinity War.

Away from any competing comicbook films and Studios (a la SDCC 2017), Marvel thrust themselves to centre stage at D23 to start to build momentum for Avenger: Infinity War. Kevin Feige paraded out almost the entire cast of Infinity War and then dropped the first official Avengers: Infinity War teaser trailer. Shown behind closed doors and not released for public consumption (yet), reports overwhelmingly agree that the trailer stole the show, even with the presence of new The Last Jedi footage.

Outside of the epic trailer (which I have yet to see), the most prominent pieces of public promotional material for Avengers: Infinity War at D23 were based around the villains of the film. It seems that next years Infinity War is really going to be a different film for Marvel, as it looks like the villains are going to be prominently featured.

As the promotional material drops I’m getting a real feeling that this first instalment of the Infinity saga is going to be the story of The Mad Titan THANOS. The films teaser poster given out at D23 homages Infinity Gauntlet #1 and is one of, if not the first teaser to feature only the villain.

Alongside the teaser poster was the showcasing of ‘The Children of Thanos’. This stood out as my favourite tease of the weekend because of my love for the comicbook storyline they were first introduced in (2013's Infinity). The title of ‘Children of Thanos’ was revealed by Marvel president Louis D’Esposito and it likely refers to the group of Thanos’ adoptive children (similar to Nebula and Gamora) that serve as his lieutenants in the film. It could also be a nod to the idea explored in the Thanos Rising comic mini-series (2013, by Jason Aaron) that Thanos spread his seed across the galaxy in pursuit of some kind of normalcy.

The group on display, known as The Black Order in the comics, consist of Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, and Cull Obsidian (Black Dwarf). They made their first appearance in the comics in The New Avengers #8 (Vol. 3) during the 2013 Infinity event. In the Infinity storyline The Black Order are individually charged by Thanos to pursue Infinity Stones held by the Illuminati. This could be closely paralleled in Infinity War with each individual member of the Black Order attacking a different group of heroes who are protecting an Infinity Stone. I have been really hoping that the MCU will be taking cues from Hickman’s Infinity Event and it looks like they are heading that way!

The final Infinity Gauntlet design was also revealed at D23. We have seen this in the past (Thor (Odins vault - right hand), AOU - left hand) but the scale and detail shone through in the displayed piece.

This easily sits as my most anticipated film of 2018 and I can not wait to see the teaser, hopefully after SDCC 2017.
