Marvel Studios | SDCC 2017
Hot off the heals of their appearance at D23 and the unveiling of the first official teaser trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios stormed Hall H on Saturday to highlight their next two films; Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, while also dropping teases for Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel and Avengers: Infinity War!
We will be discussing all the details of Marvel Studios SDCC 2017 reveals on episode #81 of The Nerd Room, airing as part of our 2 episode coverage of D23 and SDCC 2017 on Wednesday July 26th.
Marvel kicked off the SDCC weekend by releasing new posters for Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther. The Thor: Ragnarok poster perfectly depicts the colour palette and the tone of the film while continuing to amp up the anticipation level for what promises to be a very different Thor film. The Black Panther poster is a huge step up from the first poster which looked painfully photoshopped, The King has certainly arrived!
Marvel Studios Hall H Panel
Posted by We Live Entertainment
The panel kicks off with Kevin Feige revealing details about Ant-Man & The Wasp, and Captain Marvel. As predicted by TNR's own Troy, concept art for Captain Marvel was shown as well as the reveal of some huge plot details. Captain Marvel will be set in the 90's before the events of Iron Man and will feature a 2-eyed Nick Fury (with some de-aging tech applied). This is a unique setting for a MCU film as traditionally each film serves as a sequel to the one previous. The 90's setting will allow for a full origin story for Captain Marvel outside of the events of Infinity War and may also gives us that Nick Fury origin story.
Probably the biggest reveal of the panel was that Captain Marvel will be battling the shape-shifting Skrulls. The film rights for the Skrulls were previously thought to have been owned by Fox under the Fantastic Four banner, but with this reveal we now know that they are either shared or Marvel has been working with Fox to acquired back characters. I'm immesnsly excited for the Skrulls to appear in this film and I can only image what this means for future films! Will we get a secret invasion storyline in Phase 4? Is their a Skrull already amongst the ranks of the MCU heroes?
Captain Marvel lands in theatres on March 8th, 2019.
Kevin Feige revealed casting news from Ant-Man and the Wasp and although plot details are being kept tight we now know additions to the cast include of Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch, Randall Park as SHIELD agent Jimmy Woo, Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, and Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster. The inclusion of Janet Van Dyne and Bill Foster, two important legacy characters from the comics, only gets me that much more excited for this film!
On the final day of SDCC 2017 Marvel released a concept art poster for Ant-Man and the Wasp. The poster sees Giant-Man fighting along side of Wasp and confirms the return of Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and Michael Pena.
Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theatres on July 6th, 2018.
The first part of the Marvel Studios panel ended with the cast of Thor: Ragnarok discussing their characters in a bit of detail and the release of a brand new trailer! Highlight from the trailer include an incredible colour palette, witty dialog, Loki's role, and an evolved Hulk!
Thor: Ragnarok smashes into theatres on November 3rd, 2017.
The Thor: Ragnarok panel was followed by the Black Panther panel. The cast for this film is absolutely incredible and it continues to rank amongst the most anticipated films for 2018. Footage was shown but not released outside of Hall H, watch for a second trailer dropping in the coming months!
Black Panther drops on February 16th, 2018
Marvel did show the packed house in Hall H the Avengers: Infinity War teaser trailer and although they have yet to release it publicly (much to the dismay of the entire internet), Marvel did release a 3-part poster over the weekend depicting the scenes shown in the trailer and when merged together we get an epic banner poster!
Painted by Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding, the poster gives us our best look at what appears to be the hero groupings we are going to see in the first part of the film and we also get a good look at Nomad Cap, and Teen Groot!
Thanks you for reading and make sure to check out Episode #81 of The Nerd Room for our breakdown of the weekend reveals (drops July 26th).

Avengers: Infinity War | Thanos Rising
Away from any competing comicbook films and Studios (a la SDCC 2017), Marvel Studios thrust themselves to centre stage at D23 to start to build momentum for Avenger: Infinity War.
Away from any competing comicbook films and Studios (a la SDCC 2017), Marvel thrust themselves to centre stage at D23 to start to build momentum for Avenger: Infinity War. Kevin Feige paraded out almost the entire cast of Infinity War and then dropped the first official Avengers: Infinity War teaser trailer. Shown behind closed doors and not released for public consumption (yet), reports overwhelmingly agree that the trailer stole the show, even with the presence of new The Last Jedi footage.
Outside of the epic trailer (which I have yet to see), the most prominent pieces of public promotional material for Avengers: Infinity War at D23 were based around the villains of the film. It seems that next years Infinity War is really going to be a different film for Marvel, as it looks like the villains are going to be prominently featured.
As the promotional material drops I’m getting a real feeling that this first instalment of the Infinity saga is going to be the story of The Mad Titan THANOS. The films teaser poster given out at D23 homages Infinity Gauntlet #1 and is one of, if not the first teaser to feature only the villain.
Teaser Poster Art by: Ryan Meinerding
Alongside the teaser poster was the showcasing of ‘The Children of Thanos’. This stood out as my favourite tease of the weekend because of my love for the comicbook storyline they were first introduced in (2013's Infinity). The title of ‘Children of Thanos’ was revealed by Marvel president Louis D’Esposito and it likely refers to the group of Thanos’ adoptive children (similar to Nebula and Gamora) that serve as his lieutenants in the film. It could also be a nod to the idea explored in the Thanos Rising comic mini-series (2013, by Jason Aaron) that Thanos spread his seed across the galaxy in pursuit of some kind of normalcy.

The group on display, known as The Black Order in the comics, consist of Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, and Cull Obsidian (Black Dwarf). They made their first appearance in the comics in The New Avengers #8 (Vol. 3) during the 2013 Infinity event. In the Infinity storyline The Black Order are individually charged by Thanos to pursue Infinity Stones held by the Illuminati. This could be closely paralleled in Infinity War with each individual member of the Black Order attacking a different group of heroes who are protecting an Infinity Stone. I have been really hoping that the MCU will be taking cues from Hickman’s Infinity Event and it looks like they are heading that way!
The New Avengers (Vol. 3) #8
The final Infinity Gauntlet design was also revealed at D23. We have seen this in the past (Thor (Odins vault - right hand), AOU - left hand) but the scale and detail shone through in the displayed piece.

This easily sits as my most anticipated film of 2018 and I can not wait to see the teaser, hopefully after SDCC 2017.
Let us know what you think of the villains taking the dominant position for the early teases of Avengers: Infinity War. We will be discussing all the details of the Marvel reveales at D23 and SDCC 2017 on Episode #81 Part 1 of The Nerd Room Podcast airing Wednesday July 26th, 2017!

Spider-Man Homecoming | Box Office Success
Spider-Man: Homecoming has swung to a $117 million domestic opening weekend, outpacing most early predictions and landing the third highest opening of 2017!
Spider-Man: Homecoming has swung to a $117 million domestic opening weekend, outpacing most early predictions and landing the third highest opening of 2017!
Homecoming’s huge weekend haul makes it the second highest opening for a Spider-Man film, second only to Spider-Man 3’s $151 million opening in 2007. It is also the best opening film in a Spider-Man series outgrossing Spider-Man ($114 million), and The Amazing Spider-Man ($62 million).
Possibly the most impressive box office feat is that Spider-Man: Homecoming now holds the largest opening weekend for a new solo franchise film in the MCU, topping Iron Man ($98 million), GotG ($94 Million), and Marvel’s last solo entry Dr. Strange ($85 million). This is great news for one of the leading franchise going into Phase 4, especially considering this is the third attempt at Spider-Man in the last 15 years.
Homecoming will run into heavy competition over the next few weeks, including War for the Planet of the Apes and Dunkirk, but being a highly praised, all ages summer option, it should have no issue topping $300 million during its domestic run.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny | Episodes #1-6 | Building Continuity
The first 6 episodes aired on Disney’s YouTube channel and the series will continue to air on the Disney Channel starting July 9th.
These shorts are carefully crafted to add little details to Star Wars continuity, and as someone who loves the details, I couldn't ask for more out of this new series!
Star Wars: Forces of Destiny is a canonical animated miniseries that spans all eras of the Star Wars universe, telling stories of our female heroes in 2-3 min episodes. The first 6 episodes aired on Disney’s YouTube channel and the series will continue to air on the Disney Channel starting July 9th.
These shorts are carefully crafted to add little details to Star Wars continuity, and as someone who loves the details, I couldn't ask for more out of this new series!
Here is some of the expanded continuity built in the first 6 episodes of Star Wars: Forces of Density.
Episode #1: Sands of Jakku
Timeline: Star Wars: The Force Awakens after Rey rescues BB-8 from Teedo
Official Synopsis: Rey fends off a creature that wants to devour her new friend, BB-8.
Significants to canon:
- Rey unknowingly uses the Force, not unlike Anakin during the pod races in TPM.
- First full appearance of the Nightwatcher Worm (partial appearance in TFA, named in Star Wars: TFA The Visual Dictionary).
Episode #2 | BB-8 Bandits
Timeline: Star Wars: The Force Awakens right before Rey and BB-8 journey to Niima outpost.
Official Synopsis: Rey and BB-8 take off on a speeder to flee scavenger thugs who want to steal BB-8.
Significance to canon
- The return of Teedo! This episode answers the question of why Teedo gave up an extremely valuable droid like BB-8 without a fight, it turns out he didn’t.
Episode #3 | Ewok Escape
Timeline: Star Wars: ROTJ after Leia meets Wicket.
Official Synopsis: Leia and Wicket work together to help Ewoks escape from stormtroopers.
Significance to Canon
- Stormtroopers prove to be even worse shots than we all thought.
- Its revealed that Wicket gave Leia the Ewok dress she is wearing during ROTJ.
Episode #4 | The Padawan Path
Timeline: Between episodes ‘Hunt for Ziro’ (S03 E09) and ‘Heroes on Both Sides’ (S03 E10) of Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 3
Official Synopsis: On her way to a Jedi ceremony, Ahsoka leaps into action to stop a malfunctioning droid.
Significance to canon
- The earliest chronological appearance of the Force-sensitive tree (first appearance in S5 E20 ‘The Wrong Jedi’ of the Clone Wars).
- Yoda gives Ashoka an extension to her Padawan braid.
Episode #5 | Beasts of Echo Base
Timeline: Before the events of Empire Strikes Back
Official Synopsis: Leia and R2-D2 must free Chewie from the clutches of a ferocious wampa.
Significance to Canon
- Brings the Wampa's presence at Echo Base into canon, a direct nod to the deleted Wampa scenes from ESB.
- The door that the Wampa is trapped behind might be the same one that C3P0 removes a warning sign from that leads to a Snowtrooper being attacked in a deleted scene from ESB. The scene was partially made canon in the reference book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.
Empire Strikes Back - Blu-Ray deleted scenes
Empire Strikes Back - Blu-Ray deleted scenes
Episode #6 | The Imposter Inside
Timeline: Based off of Ashoka's age potentially sometime during Season 5 of Clone Wars?
Official Synopsis: Ahsoka and Padme face off against a shape-shifting bounty hunter.
Significance to canon
- The shape-shifter appears to be the bounty hunter Cato Parasitti who made her first appearance in S02 E01 ‘Holocron Heist’ of The Clone Wars. This would be the second encounter between Ahsoka and Cato.
- This is the first mention of the Arthurians.
Look for my next summary for Episode #7-12 of Star Wars: Forces of Destiny coming soon.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Spoiler Free Review
Spider-Man’s entrance into the MCU has never meant as much as it probably should have to me. I really enjoyed his appearance in Civil War but I had yet to fully appreciate the importance of his inclusion in the MCU, that is until I saw Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Spider-Man’s entrance into the MCU has never meant as much as it probably should have to me. I really enjoyed his appearance in Civil War but I had yet to fully appreciate the importance of his inclusion in the MCU, that is until I saw Spider-Man: Homecoming.
I haven't had this much genuine fun in a movie since Guardians of the Galaxy was released in 2014. Homecoming is full of heart, action, and excellent story telling with characters you immediately want to see more of. This is a shining example of how to tell a personalized story in a massively expansive Cinematic Universe. Each cameo and Universe reference served a purpose to the Spider-Man narrative and provided a solid foundation for the film to launch off of into its own story.
Taking Peter Parker back to his high school (teenage) roots gives us a fresh take on the hero’s struggle in the MCU. Tom Holland's performance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man is profoundly engaging and he is surround by a diverse cast of extremely likeable characters. Even with MCU heavy weights like RDJ/Iron Man, it is still very much a Peter Parker/Spider-Man film. The suit, web-slinging, and CG is flawless, I couldn't tell where the practical ends and the CG begins.
Homecoming’s main villain doesn't live up to ‘Loki’ status but Adrian Toomes/Vulture strays away from Marvel’s one-dimensional villain problem and is an excellent adversary for a young hero in a world full of superheroes.
As a fandom, we have to accept each film in the MCU as a sequel to the one before and we can no longer expect to have a completely isolated film that doesn’t acknowledge and integrate what came before. That being said, to have a full appreciation for the references and building blocks in the film, make sure to refresh yourself with The Avengers, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: AoU before heading into Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Spider-Man is going to be one of the pillars of the MCU going forward and Homecoming is an excellent solo and franchise entry into the ever expanding MCU, see it NOW!

The history of the Inhumans in the MCU is much more turbulent than any other property to date. Once slated to have a theatrical release of November 2, 2018 it was quickly shifted to July 12, 2019 in the wake of Spider-Man joining the MCU. Its original release slot it would fallen in between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 and would have had to tie intimately the storyline developed between those event films.
At the time of the original announcement in 2014 I speculated that the terrigen bomb would have been set off towards the end of Avengers: Infinity War which would lead directly into an Inhumans film. This would have somewhat paralleled the 2013 Infinity comicbook event that launched the wave of Inhumans titles we have today.
As the Inhumans were set to make their original theatrical debut in 2018 they made their first MCU canonic appearance on TV towards the end of the second season of AOS in 2014. The storyline in AOS is a bit of a hit and miss but they did have some freedom to set up the origins of the Inhumans while noticeably staying away from any mention of the Royal Family or Attilan.
As the Inhuman story continued to develop in AOS through its 4th season the Inhumans film was quietly removed from the cinematic slate in early 2016 and placed into development purgatory until the announcement of the Inhuman IMAX/ABC event in late 2016.
The Inhmans is going to be a real test for the continuity of the MCU. If AOS, Inhumans, and the MCU are in fact contained within one single universe there needs to be references and subtle ties to the wider MCU continuity in the Inhumans. With a unprecedented Cinematic-TV style of release, this could be the perfect continuity bridge for the entire MCU.

The Defenders are set to hit Netflix on August 18th, 2017 and arriving alongside will be Hasbro’s recently revealed Netflix Marvel Legends Wave!
The wave consists of four MCU Netflix characters (Daredevil, Elektra, Punisher, and Jessica Jones) and two comic based characters (Bullseye and Blade) with a BAF Man Thing.
The Netflix based Legends are a must have, the sculpts and character selections for this first wave are excellent. In the past the Legends comic figures have paralleled on screen appearances of characters, could the inclusion of Bullseye and Blade in this wave a way hint at what is to come in the Netflix series in the future? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
